Product Overview
Vintage wooden wall mount match safe and striker with a wood burned or pyrography image of a little black boy holding a match bucket with instructions to scratch your matches on his overalls, not on the wall. One the wall behind the boy there is a picture of a black boxer that is captioned, "A Black Hope." Maker unknown. Found in the estate of a prominent African American educator who was compiling Black Memorabilia items for a museum that was unfulfilled prior to her death. The plaque measures about 9 3/4 inches tall. It is in good condition. Has old $40 price tag on the back, the sandpaper overalls have had a newer piece of sandpaper applied over the old at some point. The actual match holder cup, which would have been made of wood, is missing...replacing it wouldn't be too hard, the original was a rounded cup made of wood like appears on other match safes at the time. The lettering and artwork looks to have been painted over at some point to make the lines stand out. The wood has an age split and surface wear as pictured. Neat old piece of Americana to add to your collection. Refer to the photos for a better idea of the style and condition, you will receive the exact match holder that is pictured.
