This is a vintage ceramic figure of an African or islander with a Made in Japan stamp on the bottom. The figure depicts a topless black woman with hand-painted grass skirt and features.
This figure was found in the estate of a prominent African American educator who was compiling Black Americana and Black Memorabilia items for a museum prior to her death. Novelty souvenirs such as this one were not always made in the region that they were sold, where this one was made is unknown.
