Product Overview
This is a vintage handmade travel souvenir. Figure is from Oshawa, Canada and depicts what appears to be an indigenous African woman with a bowl on her head with melons on it. Marked made in Japan on the bottom. What would possess anyone in Oshawa to sell such a depiction as a souvenir, and/or what would make a visitor to Oshawa want to buy such an item as a souvenir is beyond the scope of our imagination.
This figure was found in the estate of a prominent African American educator who was compiling Black Americana and Black Memorabilia items for a museum prior to her death. Novelty souvenirs such as this one were not always made in the region that they were sold, where this one was made is unknown.
