Antique Victorian "Prince Albert" style "Go To Bed" cylindrical brass match safe / vesta box, featuring deep plum-maroon japanned lacquer accented with gilded bands. There's a finial on top meant to hold a single match to light one's way to bed without having to light a candle or lamp.
The embossed top lid features a detailed floral rosette reading "WARRANTED PATENT WAX VESTAS," centered by a turned brass candle/match nozzle designed to hold a single burning wax taper. The underside base is fitted with a finely grooved, engine-turned concentric striker plate. The two-piece canister separates via a smooth friction fit to reveal a clean brass interior. Very good antique condition with rich, honest patina, solid brass construction, and authentic scattered lacquer flaking consistent with 19th-century use.
