Product Overview

This is an original antique Victorian chromolithograph greeting trade card (c. 1880s-1890s). It is unsigned; the maker is unknown. Back is blank and unused for advertising.

The front features a color stone-lithograph depicting an elderly Black gentleman with wire-rimmed glasses and a white beard ("Uncle Sam") leaning out of a brick building window, holding a clay pipe and a newspaper titled "The American Citizen". A printed sheet hanging below displays a period dialect holiday verse: "While him read him paper, so, Much respected Uncle Sam. Neighbours bows extremely low-Dat's de sort ob man he am! Uncle Sam, him nebber proud-Berry affable, him say, Smiling sweetly on de crowd, 'Wish you Merry Christmas Day!'" It is marked "Copyright" in the lower-left area, and the reverse side is blank stock.
