This is an original 19th-century ninth-plate tintype portrait photograph (c. 1860s) presented in a partial miniature case. The ferrotype plate depicts a stern studio portrait of a man styled with a chin curtain beard, collar-length hair, a dark jacket, and a patterned checkered shirt and vest.
The image is set under protective glass within a bright gold-tone, floral-embossed brass mat and preserver assembly, housed inside the bottom tray half of a black leatherette case measuring 2 1/2 inches tall by 2 inches wide. The border of the case tray features decorative gilt scrollwork tooling, and the reverse shows an octagonal pebbled leatherette design. Condition is good vintage, featuring sharp subject contrast and clear detail with mild age toning, while the case retains its side catch hardware and lacks its top lid half.
