Product Overview

Nice looking vintage postcard with Black Americana theme. Pictured and shipped in stiff top loader. Condition is as pictured.

This is an authentic vintage linen-era comic postcard from approximately 1940, featuring a problematic and offensive "Chocolate Drop Comic" theme that utilizes racist caricatures. The illustration shows a exaggerated figure standing inside a white toilet, pulling the chain on what appears to be a busted pipe, with exposed buttocks and stylized features typical of "Black Americana" memorabilia from this time period.

The text at the bottom uses phonetic dialect and a scatological-themed poem to make a "comic" point: "Dis shower am busted / But ah still am o.k. // So ah's sendin dis 'ere card / For ah have no more to say.". The top-right corner bears the early serial number C-249.

The card is unposted (unused), which is the preferred state for maximum value, as standard "uncirculated" vintage cards generally carry a premium over used ones. The reverse side (Image 2) is a standard divided back with blue print identifying it as "C. T. CHOCOLATE DROP COMICS-10 SUBJECTS", making this an even more defined collected series item. It is a standard "GENUINE CURTEICH-CHICAGO 'C. T. ART-COLORTONE' POST CARD (REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.)" and bears standard "PLACE ONE CENT STAMP HERE" text. It also shows a second production number, 0B-H1406. The condition is excellent, complete and uncirculated, with minor foxing consistent with standard long-term storage of uncirculated cards.
